Description of Low Mill Outdoor Centre

Welcome to Low Mill Outdoor Centre offering outdoor activities in North Yorkshire since 1976.

We offer high quality all inclusive residential and day outdoor education experiences with group activity courses for all sectors of the community including schools, colleges, youth groups, families, corporate groups and NGB courses. The Centre has been adapted to accommodate those with special needs and disabilities.

Situated in the Village of Askrigg, Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, we are ideally placed in one of the most beautiful areas in the North of England for outdoor education, environmental education, team building activities and activity adventure holidays in the UK. Some of the activities include: Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Kayaking, Canoeing, Archery, Gorge Walking, Caving, High Ropes course, geocaching, Orienteering, environmental studies and The John Muir Award.

Activities at Low Mill Outdoor Centre

Abseiling

We run our abseiling sessions from Apperset Viaduct, a viaduct on the disused railway line from Hawes to Garsdale Head, 56 feet high at its highest point. During a typical session, everyone will get to try two or three abseils of varying height.

Canoeing

Most of our canoeing sessions are run on Semerwater, North Yorkshire's largest natural lake, and just a 12 minute drive from Low Mill Outdoor Centre. We use Canadian canoes which can be used in pairs, threes or as rafts with up to 6 participants working together.

Gorge Walking

We have the use of three different gorges in the area, each with a very different nature and suitable for different abilities, Mill Gill, Arn Gill and Hell Gill. Each gorge involves going up or down through the gorge in the water, tackling whatever obstacles lay in the way, be it a deep pool, a waterfall or just difficult terrain.

Hill Walking

Low Mill is positioned in the middle of Wensleydale, a great location for fell walking.
We have several different favourite walks, one that start and finishes at Low Mill and follows the path of Mill Gill. Other fell walks include Penn Hill and Keld Gorge.
We can also organise and staff walking expeditions in the Yorkshire Dales.

Mountain Biking

We use well maintained and robust mountain bikes to ride the trails and tracks around Askrigg. As Wensleydale is a naturally hilly part of the world, mountain biking sessions tend to involve a lot of riding up hill, but its always worth the effort when you get to ride back down again!!

Raft Building

We run raft building sessions at Semerwater, North Yorkshire's largest natural lake, near Askrigg, using barrels, wood and lots of rope. The challenge is to construct a raft as a team that will be able to carry everyone in your team.

Zip Wire

Participants are safely tied into the zip wire with a harness and two ropes before jumping from the cliff-top platform to fly through the air at top speed.

Archery

We normally run our archery sessions from the football pitch beside the centre. We use easy-to-use re-curve bows of varying sizes to make this activity suitable for participants of all ages and abilities.

Caving

Caving is often the most enjoyed activity at Low Mill.
Some of the caves that we use include Longchurn, Thistle and Runscar caves, Crackpot and Yordas. This gives as a large amount of flexibility in how challenging we make your caving adventure!

High Ropes

Our high ropes course is built on the Low Mill grounds. The course is suitable for secondary school aged participants and up, and has easier and harder obstacles in it. The hardest, the Cats Crawl, is a challenge even for the instructors!

Kayaking

We use single closed cockpit kayaks aimed at those with a little more experience wanting a more adventurous activity. We have access to a local grade 1 - 2 river for those wanting to try white water. The River Swale and other sections of the Ure are only a short drive away, for more of a challenge and a whole day on the river.

Orienteering

We have our own orienteering course near Low Mill. During a orienteering session, you will be taught to use and orientate the map, and get to find different markers and will finish with a competition to find the most markers.

Rock Climbing

You can climb on our climbing tower on site, or drive to one of the local climbing crags to climb on real rock. For local crag climbing sessions we normally visit either Twistleton Scars or Downholm Quarry, as both of these venues provide rock climbs of suitable difficulty to be easy enough for novices, and difficult enough to challenge experienced climbers.
